I stole my opening line from my roommates. They were bragging on how they intend to start their blog post. They “no know Naija woman no dey carry last“. If they see this, I am begging ahead of time. Don’t hate. I didn’t have a choice. I saw an opportunity and leverage on it. So here is the opening line.

It is said “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”, but this once, what happened here this weekend must be made known. No, I don’t have gossiping tendencies, just a mouth that runs like a tap.

For a while, I thought I knew all about twitter, heck I used to call myself a twitter guru, I even have a banner to that effect on my blog, but 5 seconds into Gary Vaynerchuk’s session, guess who realized she was still at the bottom of the ladder.

Twitter Search: Maybe I shouldn’t compare the searches results from these two, but in my opinion, Google gives you generalized searches any time you enter a word or phrase in that entry box. Twitter actually lets you know who is talking about it, what is being said about it and provides the avenue for you to interact with them. Twitter allows you interact real time. With Google, I see all the information they are pushing at me, but I cannot interact almost immediately. Quick tip, if you want to be known for a certain keyword, search for that keyword on twitter and when the results come up, reply any tweet that even so much as smells like your keyword. Thank you Gary, you are the reason I found a couple of new friends and I am still counting.

Facebook Post Boost: It happens that the pretty lady that taught me all I know about Facebook advertising was sharing a room with me. After the lessons, I knew I could walk on water. Heck no one could tell me anything, because I knew everything. Then I walked into the room right after lunch break and Michelle Pescosolido is talking about Post boost. Up until that time, it felt like a waste of money to me, because I thought paying money to promote my post to my friends was just plain ridiculous. I could just tell’em to look at it and I’ll do that for free. Boy was I in for a surprise. She explained how in the news feeds the particular post that I boost will automatically go to the top of all my friends news feeds and how that happens for their friends as well. Again guess who is leaving a lot of traffic on the table? I didn’t even take into consideration the time I would spend telling all of them one by one to go look at my article. Sometimes I can be narrow minded. Thank goodness for events that help me step out of my comfort zone.

Pinterest: When this first came out, I am sure I am one of the few Nigerians that knew about this. I remember the sign up process took a few days to be complete. Anyways, I totally didn’t understand this and along the way I ditched this. My biggest take home was discovering the psychology of the platform. It is a place to sell goods and not necessarily services. Check out this other fact. It appeals more to the female clan. Here is something you want to remember anytime you hear the phrase “social media.” Whatever audience or niche you pick, you better know where they hangout or where they usually gather because I don’t see the point of creating content and targeting it at the wrong people.

Tumblr: Gary predicted that it is going to be the next big thing after twitter. For this simple reason. All the youngsters are there. They have left Facebook for mummy and daddy. So you might want to check out Tumblr, try a few things there. I haven’t done so much of Tumblr, so it is going to be a learning experience for me. Other than that, I cannot give you any other info. In case you think I am bluffing, just think about twitter like 3 years ago.

Finally, I learnt the only way to make a killing on social media is interaction. Real human being come there to interact, make friends and share stuff about themselves. All the automated software and stereotyped message you send because you are trying to make a sale is going to put them off. Build a relationship first if you want to have a life time customer.

So that’s it for now folks, be sure to follow me on twitter. I am @toperants.

See ya!

Writing is my forte and even though I promised to do a Vlog every Thursday, stepping out of my comfort zone is a bit challenging, so you all need to give me room today. Last week was pretty amazing, because I got some new material that’s going to take my knowledge of app development to another level. Shout out to all the folks that have downloaded my apps. I really appreciate you “plenty much”. But Nigeria has more than a hundred million people. A few thousand downloads isn’t enough, so tell your friends please. At the end of this article, I will give you links to all the apps I have developed.

Okay, let’s get down to business. I believe that the social media generation is the generation that relies on social media for everything. I mean it, do you know that I rely solely on my expertise in social media to sustain me, expand my network and also educate me on current trends, even though I have a B.A in English Language. On Saturday, I wrote down 5 guilty pleasure or habits that gave birth to the Social Media generation in Nigeria. Here it goes.

Hi5 and Facebook addiction: I remember when the hi5 bug swept across Nigeria. At the time the fun was in uploading pictures and having a zillion friends on your buddy list that you knew you may never meet. And suddenly we realized that even though popularity wasn’t something we could gain in the real world, the virtual world was giving us that room, so screw reality. By default or design, Facebook had better persuading skills and they got all of us to convert and move over. To a lot of serious minded parents and individuals, it seemed like a bunch of wasted effort and time that my generation was putting into getting a large network, uploading pictures, connecting with friends and so on. What good could come out of this?

Mobile Chat Messengers: Blackberry was another addiction. I went all out to get a blackberry just because I wanted to ping. We have Barrack Obama to thank for this rave. At the time, internet browsing services offered by all the various providers had to be done on a laptop or a desktop computer. The providers that offered the mobile internet services had outrageous prices and the list of negative side effects was endless. Blackberry or should I say RIM, had the secret. And for about N5,000, you could surf the internet for a whole month as well as chat on this app called a Blackberry messenger. Another BAD habit or so it was termed by those above us. I know countless of times I walked on the street starring at my screen oblivious to the world around. As far as I was concerned my world started and ended in that small contraption. Once again my generation discovered the points you could score being constantly on the BB platform.

Twitter: I’d also like to believe that twitter is another guilty pleasure that increased social media awareness in my generation, but I won’t go any further without crediting mobile application. Twitter took Nigeria by storm and this is because of the mobile app version. In my opinion, Twitter took one major feature from Facebook. Status updates and suddenly everyone wanted to tell the world what was going on with them. Seems like a total waste of time to some, but let’s wait to get to the end of this debate.

Games: Now I am talking about video games, computer games and mobile games of course. I have seen kids…ok they are adults now that could go for hours without food, just because they need to pass a certain level of the game. I have no clue as to when games became really huge, but it was a trend that seemed like a dead end for parents and teachers who had invested so much in the education of kids that were addicted to these guilty pleasures.

Creativity: If you noticed the trail I took, I kept stressing the fact that all the guilty pleasures took a considerable amount of time and effort and it looked like a total waste. From this point on, I want to give kudos to my generation. Creativity is the last piece of the puzzle that enabled this Social Media kids turn all their guilty pleasures to marketing tools. So many young and innovative minds in Nigeria have used all these guilty pleasure to expose their brands and services. Talk about the rise of the Nigerian entertainment industry or the raise of Nigerian online retail shops, Online Advertising agencies, online traffic report stations, informative Youtube channels about Nigeria and the list keeps on growing. Thank goodness we were able to put to good use the guilty pleasure we pick up along the way.

But wait oh, when I see my own child picking up a guilty pleasure, do I keep quiet, do I encourage him or discourage him? Will it turn around in the future and sustain him? Will it be a plus or a minus? All these questions, I cannot answer, because the future is unknown. Let’s just hope and pray.

Hey I didn’t forget my promise. The apps are

Linda Ikeji

Toolz Oniru (Should show up in a couple of hours)

Bella

They are all in Google play store. I am hoping to get them into the apple store in a bit. Watch out for my Nigerian Soup app.

One more thing, don’t forget to follow me on twitter. The handle is @toperants.

Till next week, I remain yours truly!

I don’t know don’t what happened, but I thought the 6 hours of sleep I had would be enough to get me through today, but since I got here na so so yawn yawn I dey do. Errmmm, okay what’s new? I just entered the building and my body is trying to get accustomed to the work environment. Let’s hope this post would be void of grammatical errors because right now my head is spinning and no I’m not having a hangover…hehehehe! What did you think about my Thursday vlog? Tacky shey? Cut me some slack jare, it is my first try.

So on to the issue I wish to address this morning, DEADLY errors that MUST be avoided in blogsphere. After all achieving stratospheric success should be the ultimate goal, so anything obstructing it should be dealt with accordingly. As is my custom, I would outline 5 of them.

Procrastination: Ever heard the phrase “I’ll do it later”? For some unknown reason, ‘later’ never ever comes. A lot of bloggers fail to realize that constant updates is what keeps your blog alive and the lack of such updates more often than not stem from the procrastination factor. Until you stop treating blogging like a random hobby, it will always be something you only give “spare time”. And “spare time” is always never. When you procrastinate, it presents you as unprofessional, because when push comes to shove, you’ll rush that blog post and goodness knows the numerous grammatical blunders that might be lurking in your articles. Why would you let procrastination steal a vehicle that has the potential to transport you to financial stability? The only way to get past the procrastination virus is to make a commitment and then hold yourself accountable. Treat your blog like a business and I assure that the rewards will be well worth the effort.

The Copycat Syndrome: What makes you different from every other blogger in Nigeria? Are you a “copy and paste” blogger or are you a unique blogger? The issue is not addressing an issue that everyone is talking about; it is adding you own views and opinion. If readers wanted an account void of opinions, be sure they would try one of the local news channels. People are always looking for originality and until you can provide it, you will always fall in the class of copycats. You’ll be foolish to think no one would recognize “copied content” and once you don’t give credit to the owner, your readers’ trust in you will dwindle. In case you have it twisted, blogs are all about you voicing out your opinion and not what someone else said about the matter. YOU are the unique thing about your blog. In actual fact there is no other you on the face of the earth, so let it show in your writing.

Money Motivation: It is said that money is a good motivator, and I’d be lying if I say it is not one of the reasons that I blog, but truth be told, if it was my main reason, I would have dropped out a long time ago. I say this because I do not believe it has what it takes to keep you when the tough times come. However having a higher purpose and goal will keep you. I want to be known as the best blogger in Africa, Nigeria is too small for me. Africa needs me. I believe this has kept me going even at moments when I ask myself if it is really possible. In one of my previous topics, I talked about having a goal for your blog. Please make sure that goal is NOT to make money only. Look for deeper, richer and more fulfilling goal and I am sure we will meet at the TOP.

Write for People: I spoke a bit about being conscious of the keywords used in the article and how your article needs to be optimized for the different search engines, but I need to stress that if your writing doesn’t take into consideration the real people, your writing would be void of feelings and a personality, therefore no one will be able to relate with what you are saying.

Well, I am known to brag a lot, but I’ll just go ahead and say it. The 5th error is NOT reading Tope Rants blog posts every Monday Morning PERIOD!

It was good sharing the morning with you. Be sure to look out for my Vlog on Thursday. I’m expecting us to have some more fun time.

Make sure you hit me up on twitter. My handle is @toperants. Catch you in a bit

The line to board the plane was super long but the number of passengers trying to board wasn’t the issue. It was the number of carry-on bags that seemed to be the problem. I was trying really hard to keep my cool! As if that ever works. Then the dreaded message from the PA system went off.

“We won’t be able to accommodate more than one carry-on bag, so please the flight staff will check in any extra ones”.

You trust your girl. That one was their own oh! My three bags weren’t going anywhere. I won that battle, but the worst wasn’t over. As I approached my designated seat, I realized that my overhead locker was already packed full. I tried to complain, everyone began to form American accent mixed with cockney. Nawao, inside airplane filled with hardcore Nigerians, everybody dey deny Naija! I just smiled, walked forward and popped my bags into another overhead locker. A young respectable gentleman was just looking at me, he didn’t even bother to help, and it was so obvious that a dainty girl like me was having a hard time hurling those heavy bags over my head. Oh well na me go shop the whole America. No shaking. Oh did I mention that the owner of that spot was right behind me, but I didn’t care, didn’t someone else steal my spot?

I was just about to settle down in my chair when I heard a lady say

“hi don’t know why Nigerians behave like this. Must they halways carry too mush load?”

I felt my nasty streak kick in. I looked towards her direction and discovered she too was Nigerian, she was even blacker than normal and her “H” factor was seriously protruding. I bit my tongue only to hear another bulky lady screaming for the passengers to keep moving down the aisle, because she and her entourage had to sit down right away. I just shouted “NEXT TIME SAVE AND PAY FOR FIRST CLASS!”

After saying that, I made sure to look in the opposite direction. Silently hoping she won’t pick me out. I already assumed that she might be tempted to hit me. When nothing happened, I returned my gaze to that section of the plane. This time the scene had changed. There was an elderly man exchanging words with a middle age woman. I guess the woman was quick with words as she launched and rained curses on the old man for touching her tattered nylons. For a minute or two the man looked like he was defeated. I really wanted to come to his rescue. I guess his brain went into attack mode because he yelled “you’re a WITCH!”

I could not hold my laughter anymore, neither could several other passengers. The lady was looking for a comeback line, but none was coming. I saw her looking in my direction, and I said “ntoi for you”. The look she gave me was deadly, but I didn’t care. Now that I am thinking about it, maybe that comment wasn’t necessary. But I felt like being a douchebag..

Hey you can’t blame anyone of us, the airplane rates are outrageous most of the times and if we, Nigerians intend to use it to the fullest, by bringing extra hand luggage or tearing each other’s throat in the plane, then whose business is that.

When I came to my sense, I could see all the air host and hostesses sweaty and blushing red. They did all they could to get us to settle down, so we could take off. They succeeded, but we all knew they were dreading landing time, because the raucous would begin all over again.

A couple of my followers keep asking how they can resuscitate their blogs. From their description, you would think there is some rocket science to it, but let’s take a closer look and uncover the elephant in the room.

Stop the fantasy and actually do the work…BLOG: I remember all the things I used to fantasize about, about becoming a great public speaker, about having so much money till I could do anything I want, about having the best and fastest car in town and I could go on and on. When I started blogging, the same thing happened. I fantasied about being bigger and better than PROBLOGGER, but he was way off in Australia, so I thought I had all the time in the world. Then Linda Ikeji rose up. She was closer to home, so beating her would be a walk in the park. Guess what? I fantasied and fantasied and fantasied, but that didn’t ensure my success because there was nobody doing the work. It is said that “little drops of water makes a mighty ocean”, so becoming a renowned blogger by thinking it and not doing anything about it is hogwash. Do you want to be big in this space? Then start blogging. Write something, let’s hear your voice without it, you are just a bag of wishes, dreams and fantasies that will never be actualized!

Draw up a Content Calendar: Without a concise plan, updating your blog would seem like a chore and eventually, nothing will be done. I have always stated that in blogging consistency plays a major role. However the only way you can maintain a certain level of consistency is to have a content calendar. Simply put it is a calendar that contains the specific day and time you schedule a post to be publish and the issues or problems that would be addressed in the post. A content calendar is the “adult” that would hold you accountable. Here is a simple template I always use.

Pick a winner: I always say pick a winner and close your eyes to all the rest. As humans, we live by example. Search out the gurus in your field, that is those that blog the way you would like to. Study the strength and techniques they used to reach the height of success that they have. See if you can incorporate these techniques into your blogging style and if it works for you, if it gives you result you desire, by George stick with it. I don’t think it is possible to follow every single Guru out there, I say this because it never worked for me. Mind you I am talking from experience, but if you have a better idea, I am open to it. After all, you can achieve anything once you put your mind to it.

Connect with other bloggers: When I got back to blogging, I discovered this went a long way in sustaining my blog vision. I developed a healthy relationship with two of the most wonderful people on planet earth RebelKween and BlogAces. In my opinion, connecting with other bloggers, sharing your ideas and the vision you have about blogging with them will keep you on the straight and narrow and trust me, it is another way for you to hold yourself accountable. Calls, pings or Whatsapp messages from anyone of them almost always reminds me that I might be lagging behind in posting consistently or that I haven’t checked their blogs in a while. So if either of you are reading this, I am confessing right now. Hey you two can’t expose the fact that I am off smartphones…oops, I slipped. Since we became friends, they are my constant unconscious reminder that I have a goal to reach with Toperants. I really appreciate you both. Much love goes to my Faith aka RebelKween.

Do Collaborations: Develop article series and co-write with other bloggers. It definitely prolongs the life span of your blog. Twice I attempted writing series. One was called Tales of Love and the other Poisoned Pineapples, but somewhere along the road, I got carried away with my love for social media. However RebelKween and BlogAces have done a great job with their collaboration. The series is called PolyAndrea. You’ll love the stories as much as I did.

Hey, these are just suggestions that are working for me, so it your choice if you want to try it. Until next week people. Be good!

See ya!

I will however nag a little bit about the early morning traffic. Oh wait, my route is always against the traffic, so I am a lucky gal. Notwithstanding, I enjoy traffic on my blog. I would like my site to be packed with traffic every single second of the day. I do not believe that there is a single blogger that won’t desire to drive traffic to their blog. And you guessed right, I want to dwell a little bit on the topic of increasing traffic to your blog. In a bid not to bore you, I am going to streamline my topic into 5 effective ways to increase web traffic. I like to think that to a large extent, you have to do the groundwork of spreading your link if you want more traffic. In other words, how frequently and consistently can you get your link in front of people? Here are a couple of ways I consider as the best ways to get it done.

Mobile Instant Messaging: Emphasis is on “mobile”. There is only one device known to man that follows you everywhere. Whether it is to take a leak, or in the bathroom, or in bed, even at the beach, the mobile phone goes wherever you go. In this day and age, it can be pretty difficult working with a dumb phone. When the smart phones came on the scene, especially blackberry and just recently, the android devices, mobile instant messaging became a huge success in Nigeria. I might be forward saying this, but I doubt there isn’t a single Nigerian that doesn’t have either the “BBM” app or the “ WhatsApp” application on their smart phone. What other way would be best to get your link in front of an audience that knows and trust you? And if you hate sending broadcasts, you can always update your status with your link. Quick disclaimer, don’t spam the folks on your buddy list, or else they might be tempted to delete you. Another tip is you can ask friends that you consider “influencers” to help spread your link to their own friends. Just make sure it is not too frequent. I know my booboo Iyadunni had to do that for me on several occasions. Thanks hunney, I LOVE YOU.

Twitter and Facebook share: The two most popular blogging platforms I know allows you connect at least 2 of your social networking sites to your blog, because everyone is aware of the load of traffic that is going on there. Your job is to capture a huge chunk of that traffic and direct it to your blog. Twitter and Facebook stand out because both have the “share” feature, which can be used to reach individuals that are out of your immediate network. It is okay to ask for the shares or retweets in the case of twitter. I prefer you deliver kill content that will compel your audience to give you the share without being asked, but whatever works for you, go for it. Also participate in groups and communities where your content is valuable and relevant. I do not need to remind you of the numerous active groups, pages and lists that exist on these sites.

Develop a commenting Habit: I am tempted to say this is one of the toughest steps, but a very necessary one. Like I stated earlier, increasing traffic is all about how often you can get people to click on your link. One of the subtle ways is commenting on other blogs. When I first started, I would comment on 10 different blogs each day. From this consistent habit, I developed friendship and did a few “guest post” on other blogs. The catch is, you are always asked to submit your URL and often times email address. Guess what? If you comment intelligently, the moderator has no choice but to go check out your link. 10 different blogs in 7 days is 70 views. Catching my drift? Like I said, it is a lot of hard work, but who said hard work doesn’t pay off? Don’t be lazy, give it a try, at least do that for a month before you draw a conclusion.

Consistent Writing: Before I get into the 5th point. I need to remind you that consistent writing is a given. You don’t expect to do just one post and expect all these techniques to work for you. The catch is, you need to always have something new on your blog, or the traffic you succeed in getting to your site has nothing to read or watch

Paid Traffic: There are some of you that would rather avoid all hassles and hard work involved in the first 4 tips I outlined. This final tip is just for you. The only problem is that you would have to do away with cash. That means you are buying traffic. Did I say it was going to be easy? I had you fooled. I would love to talk about this in details, but then again, I would be giving away the juice. If you would like to know more about paid traffic, or how you can buy traffic, you know where to find me. Till next Monday, have a great week and don’t forget to follow me on twitter and like my Facebook fanpage.

I’m out!

Without it, we will live in a world of chaos and total anarchy. Like we don’t already have that, still it works, whether applied in the negative or in the positive. I got thinking about all the successful bloggers in our community, the likes of Linda Ikeji, Omojuwa, Olori Supergal and so on. I noticed certain patterns which all of them posses and it is not attributed to their place of birth, the colour of their skin or the clothes they wear, rather it has to do with the state of mind and other factors that can be acquired. Catching my drift? If you want to be effective in blogging, then I suggest you read the next couple of lines.effective in blogging, then I suggest you read the next couple of lines.

What do you want: Do you want to go into fashion or entertainment or politics? Study all the successful Nigerian bloggers. You’ll discover they have chosen audiences that they write for. For example, Linda Ikeji is entertainment, while Omojuwa is politics. How will you learn how to write if you dont know who you are to or for? Be specific, chose a target audience and then you can begin to write.

Be prolific or not?: I read a couple of places where it is said that you have to be prolific, in other words, you have to be a good writer. I am tempted to say this is not entirely true. You may not be a great writer, but the ability to get your message across to your audience is the key. Mean what you write and write what you mean. Take Linda for example, heck the lady writes in pidgin sometimes, and her message is passed. So develop the art of being understood by your audience, it’s that simple. The catch here is, the more you write, the better you become. While you are at it, make sure you are yourself. Again Linda Ikeji invented her own set of rules. Who says you can’t write in pidgin. Successful bloggers are self starters. They spell out their own rules and leave room for others to follow. And heck if you can’t type it, there is always the option of video blogging. Jump in front of the camera and just spit it out!

Consistency is the name of the game: This should have been the first point. As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and “you have got to learn to do something poorly until you learn to do it well”. “Practice makes perfect”. I can go on and on with all the quotes. All the successful Nigerian bloggers didn’t just hit greatness by accident. it was done one day at a time. In Linda’s story about her journey to success, she said it took her about 4 years before she actually started making money from her blog. I am not saying you have to wait 4 years, but you need to give it time. Giving it time means investing and expanding your knowledge about blogging. How are you going to develop if you aren’t creative and daring enough to try out new things? Try it out by writing a post every day for the next 1 month. Creativity is in you, I bet you after the first 4 or 5 post, you will have the knack to try something new. Keep at it and watch the depth of your creativity emerge. Don’t forget consistency comes with a lot of self discipline and accountability.

Take Advantage of Current Trends: Successful entrepreneurs are known to make a mark in the market, because they study trends and based on that, they provide goods and services that makes them a fortune. A very good example is the “Oga at the top” craze that swept over Nigeria in the past month. Entrepreneurs cashed in on the trend by creating T-shirts, some even created music tracks. The same goes for Successful bloggers. Some may differ with me on this, attributing it to the fact that it is cheap trick, well they can like to put a sock in it. If leveraging on current trends helps get you more traffic to your blog, oh boy, you better take advantage of it. The word here is working “smart“. Many times hard work doesn’t cut it! A basic understanding of keywords come into play. It is no secret that all search engines thrives on how best you optimize keywords in whatever content you create.

Mental attitude: The only way you can get to the top is this. In your mind you must see yourself there. If getting to top isn’t a dream, you have nurtured until it became a vision, then please don’t even start. If you are going to run at the first mention on you exchanging money for value that can upgrade your blog, then don’t even venture into it. All successful Nigerian bloggers are able to maintain that status because they don’t recoil at first sight of a challenge, be it financial, monetary or time bound. Is it a wonder that so few get to the top? Need I say more?

That’s is for now and like all successful bloggers with thick skin, be open to criticism. Let me know if this rant makes sense. Till then, I remain yours truly

I was so happy today. My Facebook campaign had done pretty well. I had been able to reach a total of 8719 active Facebook users and about 229 of those folks clicked on my ad.
That’s a 2.435% click through rate. I was so excited that I took a picture of it. I stared at it all throughout the morning. I kept looking at it as I got set for work, as I took breakfast and I was still starring at it after I had taken my seat in the bus that was to take me down to Ikeja.

I didn’t notice the little young lady by my side until she said “that looks nice. You seem to be enjoying yourself”. I turned to look at her and she repeated the same words. Of course I was enjoying myself. She proceeded to ask her next question. “So you are a …?” I stuttered at first and finally succeeded in mumbling “I’m just trying to build a presence online”. She was quiet for a while and then asked “What does that entail?” Again I hesitated for a few seconds then answered to the best of my ability. We both knew that my response wasn’t satisfactory. There was a bit of silence and then she said “that’s what I am going to do when I grow up”. She saw the look of surprise on my face when I responded and said “so you want to do this?” She nodded again. Hmmm, I thought, does she even know what this is? I decided to ask her. Her reply was this, “for one you are on Facebook but it seems like you are actually working and not just liking pictures”.

Well she had a point there. I laughed and said that’s what social media managers do. I thought that would end the conversation, but she just probed further. She wanted to know the responsibilities involved. In a bid to get out of the box I had put myself in, I decided to outline 5 things that will determine if you are a social media manager or not.

First of all (I am not Olumide) a social media manager is one who is saddled with the responsibility to guide and monitor the presence of a brand or product online. And yes it is possible for a Social Media Manager to have numerous clients. Are you doing this or do you want to do this? Need I say more?

A social media manager develops the skill of capturing the information of people who visit their webpage, or blogs. It is also known as generating leads, but the job doesn’t end there. The end in sight is to convert these leads into actual sales. I must stress that generating leads is NOT a shortcut to instant sales. A social media manager thinks long term. Do you think long term when it comes to marketing online? Do you know how to generate leads?

A social media manager knows that the sole aim is to provide information that will assist and educate current and potential customers. A manager provides answers about products or services related to a brand. Are you into content generation?

To be a successful social media manager, the need to understand how a network works is essential. A great manager knows how to find the required audience, understand the demographics of that audience, where they live and when they are online. The manager is familiar with their gender and age and knows how to tailor the brand or products to suit their needs. Do you know your target audience?

Unlike regular jobs where you get to do the usual 8-5pm store hours, Social media runs 24hours every single day and so, a Social Media Manager is tasked with managing the reputation of any business they work for. The need to constantly filter and monitor the brands cannot be over emphasized.

That’s all. Well that’s all I had for her. Once the conductor called my bus stop, I flew off my seat and jumped out. Phew! Children can be so inquisitive and that’s why you need to know what you are talking about.

Don’t forget to follow me on twitter and like my Fanpage. Till next week, I remain yours truly. Ciao!

Others think WordPress is the way to go. Their knowledge of blog themes and plugins is very rich and deep. So right now we are at a cross road. Which do we chose from? Which is the best? This is my attempt to try and present my case on what would be best to use. As I always warn you, I am very opinionated so if I come across as pushy, just accept me for who I am and perchance someday, I will change.

Here is what I think. First off, both are free. I know that wordpress has premium packages. I know this because I am biased towards wordpress. The only time I ever used blogger was when I first stumbled on the blogging concept but since then, I haven’t returned. I know both can be customized, yet I feel customization on the wordpress platform is much easier than blogger. I know this because I have tried both of them and even though my memory of events that happened in 2006 is a bit blurry, I am certain that my recollection of an unpleasant situation would not be erased so easily. Blogger is not the way to go honey. I like simple and that is why wordpress appeals more to me.

We all know Google AdSense is by far the fastest way to start making some money blogging and that is the only plus I see with the blogger platform. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise after all who owns blogger? Your guess is as good as mine. WordPress doesn’t allow Google Ads. Why? I really don’t know and that is a minus to them. On the other hand, I feel they just want to weed off those fast money schemers. But what do I know, it’s just an assumption

Another feature that I personally am not impressed with is the general writing style and outlook of blogger. Alignment is an issue blogger needs to work on. I worked on a friend’s article last year. I had so many issues in keeping my word in position. I think I had a tummy ache after 3 hours of fighting with the “ctrl” key, the “shift” key and the “J” key. WordPress is at the head of the class in that area. Hang on, I am not saying I haven’t had issues when trying to get the correct alignment for my pictures in wordpress, but the process wasn’t as tedious.

Another grievance I have with blogger is the comment portion. The wahala one goes through just to drop a comment in blogger is totally annoying. All my blogging colleagues know that I don’t drop comments once I know you use blogger. I am not exaggerating when I say it takes me the same amount of time to write a brand new post to write a simple comment on blogger. I think the programming guys for blogger should take a second look at that area. Ahn ahn, must you stress somebody just because they want to voice type an opinion?

I am tempted to think that while wordpress is constantly updating and developing all area of their platform. Blogger has decided to remain where I left them in 2007. Between the two of them, I would pick wordpress 10 times out of 10 any day any time. Still if blogger works for you, use it oh. After all is it not blogger that Linda Ikeji is using? I am just saying I don’t like it. I always say paid is the way to go. The best things in life are free, but you gats to pay exclusive stuff. That’s what separates the men from the boys. Hey it doesn’t always mean it will translate to money oh!

Take care folks, and please drop your comments.

Ciao

The Ranter!
